The Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at IUPUI invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow research position. The appointment is for one year with an option for renewal, which is preferred. The target start date is January 1, 2024.
Project description: The position is part of a five-year collaborative project between the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at IUPUI and the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, which includes 47 congregations in central and southern Indiana. The project examines parenting and religious socialization in the contemporary context and is funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. Distinguishing characteristics of the Episcopal Church include its liturgical tradition, inclusivity, and public engagement. Topics on religious parenting to be explored include parenting aspirations, challenges and needs. Themes within the cultural context to be explored include pluralism, individualism, choice, and commitment. The principal investigator is Dr. Brian Steensland, Professor of Sociology at IUPUI.
Job description: The postdoctoral researcher will help to arrange and conduct 100 interviews and 4-6 focus groups, code and analyze transcripts, and review scholarly literature. Collaboration on co-authored scholarly publications is anticipated and desirable. Residency in Indiana is required until data collection is complete (presumably between 6-12 months, depending on rate of progress). Remote or hybrid work arrangements are possible during data analysis and writing phases of the project.
Qualifications: Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in the social sciences or adjacent humanities by the start date, a strong background in qualitative data collection and analysis, and interests in contemporary American religion. Applicants must be able to work comfortably in academic and congregational settings, work independently and collaboratively, and communicate effectively.
